If you’ve read the Bible, you’ve likely encountered the word covenant. But what does it mean—and why does it matter so much?
A covenant is a chosen relationship or partnership in which two parties make binding promises to each other and work together to reach a common goal, so biblical covenants are promises or agreements between God and people.
From Genesis to the New Testament, covenants form the backbone of the Bible’s story, showing us a faithful God who keeps His promises even when people fail.
Throughout the Bible, God established five major covenants—with Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and ultimately through Jesus. Each covenant builds on the last, moving the story forward and pointing toward God’s plan to restore community with His people.
Some covenants emphasize God’s protection and provision. Others reveal God’s plan for His people. Together, they lead us to the New Covenant, where God does what humanity could never do—fully restoring relationship through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
The New Covenant is different. It isn’t based on human performance. It’s rooted entirely in God’s grace, forgiveness, and faithfulness. Through Jesus, God fulfills the promises made to Abraham, Moses, and David, offering eternal life to all who trust Him.
Understanding biblical covenants helps us see that the Bible is one unified story—and that God has always been faithful to His word.
