Biblical Insights on Thanksgiving

As we gather this holiday season with loved ones, we hope your day is filled with joy, reflection, and plenty of pie. This Thanksgiving is a perfect time to pause and cultivate gratitude—straight from the Bible. God’s Word is rich with examples and instructions that remind us that thankfulness is a response to God’s goodness and a key part of our faith journey.

Thankful for God’s Character and Provision

Throughout the Old Testament, we see people giving thanks to God for who He is and what He’s done.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1)

Verses like this highlight God’s enduring love, righteousness, strength, and wonderful deeds. The Bible shows us countless reasons to be grateful. Even in tough times, as the Israelites sometimes forgot (and complained instead), these stories teach us that an unthankful heart misses out on the joy of recognizing God’s faithfulness.

Thankful for the Gift of Christ and an Unshakable Kingdom

In the New Testament, thankfulness takes on deeper understanding—that we can be thankful for the gift of Jesus. Hebrews 12:28 urges us to be thankful because we’re receiving a kingdom through Jesus that can’t be shaken. Colossians echoes this, encouraging us to overflow with thankfulness as we’re rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:6-7). We are to let God’s peace rule in our hearts with gratitude (Colossians 3:15-16). It’s all tied to Christ’s sacrifice—where we should have gratitude for His victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Thankfulness in All Circumstances

The Bible doesn’t stop at providing “why” we should be thankful—it gives practical instructions on “how” to be grateful.  In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul tells us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus,” even amid persecution or hardship. Similarly, Philippians 4:6 advises: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

The result? A peace that guards our hearts. Paul wrote this from prison, proving that true thankfulness transcends our situations and is rooted in hope through Christ.

This Thanksgiving, let’s take a cue from Psalm 100:4-5: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

Whether you’re facing abundance or challenges, there’s always a reason to thank God for His unchanging love and the eternal hope we have in Him.

Wishing you a blessed holiday—may your heart overflow with gratitude!
