Day 4 - Giving into Fear

Reading Passage: Matthew 8:25-26

Today holds one of my favorite verses in scripture. I’d love to know what yours are.

Anytime Jesus teaches a lesson on faith, showing himself mightily faithful - it grabs ahold of my weary and often weak heart.

Can you imagine the emotions and adrenaline running through the veins of Jesus’ followers as the storm raged and they felt out of control and in need of help?

“So the disciples came and woke him up saying, ‘Lord, save us! We are going to die!’ He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, you of little faith?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” Matthew 8:25-26, CSB

Do you see why these verses are so powerful? So much of the character of God is wrapped up in His words to His closest followers.

To believe that Jesus was indeed God in the flesh - meant that you would also believe that Jesus not only can perform miracles by the power of God, but also calm the forces of any storm. I wonder if Jesus was surprised by their lack of faith?

These men were, after all, fishermen who had been through many storms on the Sea of Galilee. They had watched storms roll in, rage, roll out but leaving high and choppy water for some time after.

You see, not only did the wind and the waves obey and recognize the voice of Jesus - their Creator, but the sea went from violent to a complete standstill at His rebuke. This no doubt caused the men to stand in awe of who was with them in the boat. They believed in His divinity before, but this situation confirmed their belief.

Just like the disciples, we have had our own moments of doubt, leading us to live in total fear instead of faith. What area in your life right now do you need help trusting and resting in Jesus?

Join us tomorrow as we finish our week on rest and talk about an important question the disciples asked Jesus when they realized that His powerful word could calm such a storm.
