Day 2 - More Valuable

Reading Passage: Matthew 6:26-27

It was 1:30 A.M. and I was still awake. What should have been a good night’s sleep before a big day at work the next day, had turned into a night full of overthinking and worry that crept into my head. My night had been hijacked by anxiety.

Doesn’t it feel like in the quietest moments, when we are the least distracted, we can more easily be overcome with worry?

It was in the quietness of what was supposed to be a restful night that my thoughts were attacked and I realized I needed God to breathe truth into me. I needed to call on Him.

The psalmist David reminds us that, “The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalm 34:17-18, NLT)

So I prayed to God and then opened up my Bible to Matthew 6 as God’s Word flooded my soul.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much MORE VALUABLE than they?” Matthew 6:26, NIV (emphasis added)

Sweet music to our ears. Jesus reminds us that the Father sees us and knows our value. Even in all the mess that has brought on our anxiety, God loves us and cares about us, and for us. There’s no need to worry!

Then Jesus added a humorous reminder that hits too close to home…

“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Matthew 6:27, NIV

I don’t know about you, but there are many times I must think I’m getting paid for worrying because I’m doing it so much!

But what is worrying really going to get us?

Nothing. Not a single hour more to our life. Not anything but wasted time and energy.

Maybe your anxiety comes from fear. Maybe it comes from the unknown. Maybe it comes from not feeling seen. Whatever you are burdened with, may God’s truth be a breath of fresh air for you today, friend. May you realize that you do not need to fear for you are valued by an all-knowing God who sees you and loves you.

Thank you Jesus for the reminder that I have more value in your eyes than I may realize. Please help me to overcome anxiety by resting in the knowledge of your love and care for me. Amen.
