How to Study Philippians 4:13
Podcast Episode 58: “I Can Do All Things”
In this episode, the Chara Project team studies Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me") using the CHARA method (Context, History, Author, Research, Apply).
Looking at context, they see Paul talking about being content no matter the circumstances. He has learned to be satisfied whether having abundance or being in need. The passage connects the ability to do all things with the strength received from Christ.
Through studying the author and audience, they learn Paul wrote this from prison to the supportive church in Philippi he had founded. This church had financially helped Paul, though he clarifies the gifts ultimately come from God. Given the patron-client culture, Paul wants no strings attached.
From additional Bible passages, they see believers' strength comes from the Holy Spirit. As we align with Christ, we gain his perspective and can be content. Paul considers everything a loss compared to knowing Jesus.
As they discuss how to apply this passage, they uncover how we can worry about never finding contentment if circumstances don't improve. Like Paul, we must know God more, recall his faithfulness, pray with thanksgiving, and claim supernatural peace. Memorizing Scripture helps focus on Christ over earthly troubles.
In summary, “all things” refers not to arbitrary accomplishments but to deep contentment in diverse settings through the strength and perspective Christ provides. We can apply this by fixing our eyes on Jesus, not our shifting situations.
