How to Study Romans 8:28
Podcast Episode 48: “All Things Work Together for Good”
In this episode, the Chara project team studies Romans 8:28 (“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose”) using the CHARA Bible study method (Context, History, Author, Research and Apply). They acknowledge common assumptions that this promises earthly prosperity for believers.
However, context shows “good” relates to being conformed to Christ’s image as God’s children and heirs. Suffering now pales compared to future heavenly glory. All creation groans, awaiting freedom from decay; the Spirit intercedes in our weakness. Loving God means trusting His sovereign plans, beyond our finite understanding.
This “good” includes canceling the debt of sin, freeing us from bondage, and bringing us into God’s presence for eternity. It reorients our perspective from temporary earthly troubles to the infinite. God’s love for us cannot waver.
In application, we should expect suffering yet trust God’s impending purposes. Through prayer, we gain eternal focus and alignment of our desires with the Lord’s. We can have confidence in God’s flawless design for our lives.
In summary, this promise does not exempt believers from pain but rather anchors our hope in redemption for all creation, conformity to Christ, and unbreakable love from the Father. It radically redefines “good” around God’s plans, not our circumstances.
